Sample Dispute Letters

These templates can help you structure your dispute letters. Customize them for your specific situation — the more specific and documented your dispute, the stronger your position.

Important: These are templates, not legal advice

These sample letters are starting points. You must customize them with your specific facts and circumstances. If you have questions about your legal rights, consult with an attorney. Always send dispute letters by certified mail with return receipt requested.

Key principles for effective disputes

  • Be specific. Identify exactly what is wrong — don't just say "this is inaccurate."
  • Cite the law. Reference the FCRA sections that support your rights.
  • Include documentation. Attach copies (not originals) of supporting evidence.
  • Keep copies. Before mailing, copy everything — the letter, enclosures, and the envelope.
  • Use certified mail. The green card proves they received your dispute and when.
